Blood Sugar Solution

The Blood Sugar Solution by Dr. Mark Hyman is one of the best books I’ve seen on what is now referred to as the “Diabesity” epidemic.  He’s included really easy to understand information as to how this impacts almost all of us, and it is all about solutions!  He includes meal planning, recipes, nutrition information, supplement information….. everything you need to get your health back on track.  He also has a jammed packed website in support of the book, so he’s giving you all the tools you need.  Oh yes, on top of that, he has a PBS special that’s been on lately, so keep an eye out for it.

Blood sugar is the core issue for pretty much all of us.  You don’t have to be a diabetic to be suffering the consequences of poorly maintained blood sugar.  This book is a great place to start making positive changes, and creating a healthier new life.  Check it out!

Scary Times For Those Who Care About Health, and Blogging

In case you haven’t heard all the “cyberscreaming” recently, a very quick version of a long story is that a blogger from North Carolina had  a complaint filed against him by the North Carolina Board of Dietetics/Nutrition.  Because I don’t have first-hand knowledge of all the facts of the story, I will post a few links to other articles explaining it.

My understanding is that this gentleman has been writing his personal blog for several years, talking about his experience with Type 2 Diabetes.  Many of the blogs you see, this one included, is just our opinion or our perspective of the subjects that we write about.  This gentleman wrote about how he regained his health and is no longer diabetic after changing his eating habits.

Like all of us who have found success with managing health conditions, or are passionately freaked out at the (lack of) quality of the food people are eating, he tells people about his success and tries to help other people by sharing his information.  This ended up in a complaint being filed against him because he isn’t a licensed nutritionist.  Below are two articles that explain in more detail:

I’m sure there are many articles on this subject and I encourage everyone to read them.  Why care about this blogger?  Simple.  This is a free speech issue, as well as an issue of freedom of the internet.  That affects all of us.

The latest information that I have found on this story is that the blogger had to change things on his blog, delete information about any services he provided and the complaint was dropped.  See the official wording of all of this on the NCBDN’s site:

The bad news in all of this should be obvious.  The good news is that a lot of people have been crazy upset about it, have made a lot of noise, and have started the conversation which is always a good thing.  Make your opinions heard, especially when it comes to having access to information, and being able to say what you think.  Well, that’s just my opinion anyway.

Huge Recipe Search

I ran into a great resource on Dr. Oz’s Real Age website.  It is a very intricate recipe search for all the recipes on the site, and it includes filters such as gluten-free, sugar-free, etc.  Very handy!  To check it out, click here.

Elana’s Pantry

Finding other people who think like you do, or have conquered challenges similar to yours is, in my opinion, finding the holy grail. That’s how I felt when I found www.elanaspantry.com.  This is a really great blogsite written by Elana Amsterdam and is full of helpful information and fabulous recipes using mainly almond flour in place of grains.  These are great options for gluten-free eating, grain-free eating, low-carb eating, Primal and Paleo diets, even Passover celebrations.

Elana has become the “go to” person for cooking and baking with almond flour and she has recently published her first cookbook, The Gluten-Free Almond Flour Cookbook. Anyone living a healthy lifestyle should really think about adding this cookbook to their collection.  Almond flour is delicious, full of protein (low in carbs!), nutrient dense, versatile, full of fiber and Elana has come up with some great ways to use it.  I have only had mine for several weeks and it is already “well loved” and everything I have tried has been a delicious success.

Mark’s Daily Apple

There are so many people out there in the blogosphere that it can get overwhelming and frustrating.  When I run into any that I think might be helpful, I will post a link so that you can check them out and see if they speak to you.  www.marksdailyapple.com makes me laugh (he’s a tad sarcastic, I wonder why I like him!) and has a lot of really good, common sense information about what he calls Primal Nutrition and Primal Eating.  The basic premise – EAT REAL FOOD.  Told you I liked him!  Click here if you want to check him out.
